There’s nothing like taking a road trip through the desert with friends. Nothing like driving twenty miles down a dirt road looking for a hot spring only to discover your new favorite breakfast spot in a town you’ve never heard of. There’s nothing like walking into an abandoned metro station and realizing that even though you are surrounded by city, you’re the first human to set foot in this space for decades.
At Unsplash, we live for these moments. These unscripted connections between new places and new friends. It’s one of the last few guaranteed ways to get out of our comfort zone. Where the exhilaration of discovery lets us connect to a type of freedom not often found in today’s world.
We’ve been working with one of our favorite creatives, and good friend, Tobias van Schneider to create something that embodied this spirit of discovery. The Urban Explorer Sweatshirt is our first collaboration together and we couldn’t be more pleased with how it turned out.
We set out to design a garment that was subtle enough for any situation, and comfortable enough that you’d never want to take it off.
The sweatshirt is handmade in Canada from 400gsm 100% French Terry Cotton. French terry has the same moisture absorbing properties as the towel in your bathroom but is much much sleeker. It’s also incredibly durable and can withstand everything from a rogue tree branch to your over-affectionate cat.
The design is a tonal black foil script that reads “Fernweh & Wanderlust” with a contrasting red “Unsplash x van Schneider” patch on the right arm. Fernweh is a German word that literally translates to "farsickness" or "longing for far-off places." These two words perfectly describe the unscripted moments we’re all about. We hope they might inspire you to seek out a moment or two of your own.
